Lokomotiv Cove O35s brought a team ravaged by injury (even before round 1) to the first round of the season with Maroubra away from home on Sunday 29th March. After two hard-fought draws against Maroubra last year, the 11-man Loko team prepared for a tough start to the season.
Loko started strongly and dominated from the opening whistle, with Lee cleaning up loose balls near the defensive line and feeding the ball to Paul, Adrian, Giancarlo and Vlad in the midfield. From there, the team created several clear-cut chances within the first 15 minutes but were unlucky not to score. It took 15 minutes for Scott to open the scoring with a decisive finish after a through ball put him in on goal.
There was a nervous moment shortly after the opening goal with a mistake in the Loko defence almost gifting the home team an equalising goal. Thankfully, fill-in goalkeeper Eduardo outdid himself with a diving save. From there, Peter, Brendan and Simon in the Loko defence were rock-solid and worked well to create space and play out calmly from the back. Gordon and Scott continually created havoc in the opposition back-line, putting every ball under pressure and creating chances out of thin air. It wasn’t long before Scott put a second goal in the back of the net and the team went to the half-time break with a 2 goal lead.
In the second half, the team continued to work hard and control the game. By the end of the game, both Lee and Giancarlo had added goals to the tally, resulting in an emphatic full-time score of 4-0 to Loko.
