The AAW3s have had a slow start to the season with round 1 rescheduled and round 2 cancelled due to lack of posts at Tempe.
Last night we finally got to play our first game of the season with a round 1 catch up game against Maroubra under lights at Coral Sea.
There was lightening in the distance but luckily it stayed away long enough to complete the game.
With players rushing to the game from work we almost had to start with 10 players but managed 11 in the finals seconds before kickoff.
Loko started dominant, with the ball spending most time in the opposition half. After pressuring constantly the first goal finally came. A beautifully taken corner by Fi was met by Vic who chipped it into the top corner with the outside of her boot.
Vic then also had a hand in the second goal putting in a lovely diagonal ball to Sarah who drilled the ball in at tight angle towards the back post and into the net.
Loko was feeling pretty confident but with early season lack of fitness taking it’s toll, we lost a bit of momentum towards the end of the first half, started losing our shape and consequently found ourselves under a bit of pressure from Maroubra. Thankfully we rode out the rest of the half without conceding.
After a bit of a half time pep-talk from our coach we started the second half hungry again. Some beautiful plays up the wings and dangerous balls crossed into the middle signalled we had more goals in us yet.
Sure enough another corner by Fi led to a bit of a scramble leaving the keeper way out of position. The ball was crossed over to Vic who was in the right place at the right time to poke in her second of the night into the empty net as defenders tried to scurry back to cover.
Ingrid made it 4-0 after finding herself just outside the 18 yard box and with just the keeper to beat was able to roll the ball in to the bottom left.
Maroubra to their credit kept pushing right to the final whistle, throwing players forward and testing our defence but we held strong.
A great start to the season after going up a division this year.
